Two of the subjects I love most are coming together once
again, Physical Fitness and Movies. No matter how old you are, if you’re a gym
rat you know of the 1977 Docudrama Pumping Iron, staring Arnold Schwarzenegger. The films Writer/Director George Butler
follows around Arnold and his weight lifting buddies as they all prepare for
the 1975 Mr. Olympia competition.
Now a day’s bodybuilding is widely more accepted and
glorified, you can’t even be an action star without having a huge physique. Hollywood taking notice of the rapidly growing sport, I read an article posted on npcnewsonline.com stating that American Media Inc. has teamed up with the
Vladar company to produce what they are calling a modern day Pumping Iron. The
film crew will follow today's top IFBB Pro bodybuilders as they get ready to
compete for the 2013 Mr. Olympia.
In 1975 the production crew sought to create drama within
the athletes for a more entertaining element, for example the Lou Ferrigno
Rivalry, and the Mike Katz missing t-shirt. I wonder what this generation’s
crew is going to pull? I personally think there will be a focused Rivalry
between Phil Heath and Kai Greene, as the two are part of the top three ranking
competitors. Phil being the 2011 champion expected for great things in 2012.
Kai being a revered threat whose ranking is creeping towards the number one
spot. Kai is also use to the spotlight due to his entertaining nature and
having his own prior documentary made A New Breed: Overkill based on his journey to the 2009 Mr.
Olympia, his first Olympia.
Who knows what will happen, but with movies like Dwayne
Johnson's “Pain & Gain” coming out in 2013, and this new Mr. Olympia Docudrama coming out for
late 2013 or early 2014, it just shows the fitness game is growing and if
Hollywood is taking notice, that shows people must be interested.
